Microsoft and cloud computing giant Amazon are finally working on a way to use the cloud to make gaming more fun and more affordable.
Amazon is launching its own cloud gaming service called Prime Now, which allows users to access and stream games from the likes of Steam, Microsoft’s Xbox One, and PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus.
The service is set to launch in the US next month.
In an interview with Ars Technica, senior VP of Cloud Entertainment Matt Rogers explained how the service will work.
“It will work through the Xbox One and PlayStation platforms, but we want to also have a very simple way to stream games,” Rogers said.
“You can actually do it on a console.”
Rogers says Prime Now will be similar to Twitch, the subscription-based streaming service, but unlike that service, Prime Now doesn’t have a traditional storefront like Twitch does.
Instead, it will offer gamers a storefront in which they can access their favourite games.
The company says Prime now will also have “the ability to connect to your friends and family” and will “offer an enhanced experience with enhanced playlists.”
Rogers added that Prime Now isn’t just for gamers; the company is also planning to bring games to other platforms, including mobile.
“Our goal is to have all games, from AAA titles, to the new AAA games, the mobile games,” he said.
That’s not all; Rogers says that Prime now is “not going to be a subscription service,” but rather a “pay as you play” model, in which players will be able to “pay for a subscription and then get access to the games and services that they want.”
This means that Prime will also be available for other people, as Rogers explained that “the same price will apply for all users.”
Rogers said that the company will offer free games, but that it’s not a “zero-rating” service.
“We’re not going to make money by offering free games,” said Rogers.
“This is about bringing the most value to our customers.”
Rogers also mentioned that Prime is also “going to offer a premium tier.”
That would be similar in nature to the Xbox Play Anywhere service, which lets users play on a wide range of devices.
It’s a service that has been very popular among gamers.
Rogers said there is no price tag yet for the Prime Now service, so it’s “going be an experience where the customer can have a great experience.”
Rogers has previously said that Prime has “over a million members” already.
