Posted by The Jerusalem Times on Monday, April 26, 2020 06:37:50The social networking site Twitter has blocked access to a Palestinian account for activists who want to use it to protest the occupation of Palestine, Israel’s Channel 10 reported.
The account, @netflix account, was shut down on Monday and the Palestinian Twitter account @HsaAccount was also temporarily closed.
“Twitter was not responsible for the removal of the account,” Twitter said in a statement on Monday.
“We have suspended the account for two days as a precaution and are working to restore the account as soon as possible.”
A Twitter spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Twitter has faced mounting criticism for not doing enough to help Palestinians who are victims of Israeli and US policies and practices.
Its failure to protect Palestinian rights in the occupied territories, particularly in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, has been a major issue in the United Nations General Assembly and in the US, where the administration of President Donald Trump has taken a hard line against Israel.US President Donald Trumps decision to withdraw from the landmark 2015 Oslo Accords with the Palestinians came at a time when the White House was in talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA) to extend the two-state solution.
“The @netflix account has been suspended indefinitely and will be restored as soon it is operational again,” the statement read.
It is not clear why Twitter blocked the account.
Israel’s Channel 2 news channel reported on Sunday that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) had requested Twitter to halt the account and suspend its access for three days.
The Twitter account, which was created on November 14, 2016, had already been active for more than a month.
“It is a crime to block a Palestinian person on the internet.
Twitter has taken steps to block the accounts of Hamas, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and other groups,” said one Twitter spokesperson, who declined to be named.”
If a person blocks another person, Twitter may suspend that person’s account permanently,” said the spokesperson.
Twitter suspended the @netFLIX account in August last year, saying it was violating its Terms of Service and that it was in violation of the global online community’s guidelines.
In a tweet posted on Saturday, the @NetFlix account said it was temporarily shut down due to “an administrative error”.
“Please contact the @PNA and @HSAAccount to request their immediate access to the @Nike account.
We will make sure they have full access,” it said.
The Palestinian Twitter has not been able to reach @netFlix since September.
