Posted July 05, 2020 09:53:25The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
But the campaign did confirm to Business Insider that it did not find a way to retrieve the account.
“As of August 6, 2018, Trump was no longer using Twitter,” a spokesperson told Business Insider.
“While it may be possible to recover the account, it is not possible.”
It’s unclear how long the campaign had access to Trump’s account, which was shut down by the Justice Department in March 2020 after he admitted to lying to the FBI about his interactions with Russian officials.
Trump, who is the first major party nominee in history to have a personal Twitter account, had about 140,000 followers when he was first inaugurated, according to data from Google.
He quickly built up a following and quickly built his own Twitter account in April 2020.
“Twitter is a great platform for politicians and candidates to connect with supporters, so this would be a good time to ask Twitter for their support to regain control over the account,” said David Sirota, an assistant professor of communication and information studies at Northeastern University.
“I can see a way for Trump to regain it, but it will be tricky to recover it,” he added.
The Trump team did not immediately respond to Business Buzz’s request for an interview with the president.
But it is possible that Trump could be using his account to tweet his criticism of the Justice and FBI departments.
“There is no way that Trump is going to get his account back unless he wants to give it away,” said Sirotyas.
